Summary

Chapter 1 opens with Marina outside of Spinks' house. She had used her vacation to travel to Canada and ask him about Charlie. She noticed cats and bird feeders in his yard before he opened the door to let her in. She asked Spinks to tell her what he had told Charlie during their last meeting because she thought it might be a clue in helping her figure out what happened to him. He insisted she have some tea before he began his story, and then warned her that it was a horror story.

Chapter 2 consists of the beginning of Spinks' story. He was born in Hungary in 1922 to wealthy parents. He did not remember much about his time there, as his parents were murdered by thugs when he was four. He was eventually adopted by Charlotte and...
