Summary

Section 5 of The Night Diary begins with Nisha’s letter to her mother on September 1, 1947 and ends with her letter on November 10, 1947. Papa says that the family will stay with Rashid Uncle until Dadi’s health improves, and then head to the train station. Amil and Nisha amuse themselves as best as they can, and Nisha in particular loves watching Rashid Uncle do woodworking at the dinner table. One day, she is looking out of the window and sees a little girl from the house next door playing by herself outside. Nisha waves, but the girl runs into her home, and Nisha is worried that she has exposed her family and made them unsafe. Nothing happens. A few days later, after telling Amil about the girl, the two of them write her a note and throw it to her when they see the girl...
