Soldier Home: Summer People Summary

Nick is in Hortons Bay. He thinks very poorly of a man named Odgar, who is dating a girl named Kate whom he has a romantic interest in. He thinks that he would be a better partner for her than Ogdar. He avoids the dock at first, because he knows that Kate, Ogdar, and his other friends are there swimming, but eventually decides to go. He is welcomed warmly by Kate and swims for awhile, finding great pleasure in diving and being underwater, not so much in the act of swimming itself. His friend Bill brings his car to the dock to take everyone home and he rides back with them. Kate and Ogdar are dropped off at his house, but she tells him to come by in an hour. He walks home with a friend but then sneaks back to Kate's house where they meet and have sex outside....
