Summary

Archie and Agatha break the news of their engagement to their parents in “Chapter 11: The Manuscript.” Agatha’s mother is harsh with Archie and resents the fact that he is poor. Agatha presumes that Archie’s mother disapproves of her. The war comes. Agatha works as a nurse and Archie goes off to be a pilot.

In “Chapter 12: Day one after the disappearance,” the police bring Archie to Agatha’s car which is parked by Silent Pool. They find a suitcase packed with some of Agatha’s clothing. The investigation must proceed with suspicion of foul play.

Archie gets leave from the army to visit home in “Chapter 13: The Manuscript.” He and Agatha stay at his parents’ home in Clifford. Two years have passed since their initial engagement. Each time Archie gets leave they feel awkward around each other. Archie comes into Agatha...
