Summary

In Chapter 55, "The HMS Rana," Sally, Ana, and the Maharaja board the Maharaja's yacht, the HMS Rana. Ana and the Maharaja visit the Maharaja of Cochin, but Sally is not allowed to attend. Ana promises to find out about Alphonse. Ayesha Narayanan, the secretary for a Cochin official, arrives and tells Sally she will help her search for Alphonse.

In Chapter 56, "Ayesha," Sally and Ayesha begin following clues and discover that Alphonse may have changed his name.

In Chapter 57, "Mattancherry," Ayesha and Sally continue to follow leads. They find a man who describes Alfredo Simao who was from Lisbon. With the description, Sally becomes convinced this is really Alphonse. He had contracted malaria and the man does not know where he went. Sally becomes depressed again, knowing they have no more leads. Just before the HMS Rana is to pull out, Ayesha...
