Summary

Part Two opens with Chapter 31, titled "A Notch in the Blade." Sally meets two men who will be working in the engine room during her shift. They are Irishmen Paddy O'Connor and Johnny Doyle. Sally soon feels more at ease because the crewmen greet her as equals. One night, someone cuts through a rope of her hammock, and she falls. She remembers that someone turned her in to Garretta and knows she will have to be careful. Sally becomes suspicious that Paddy is the one who cut her hammock.

In Chapter 32, "Storm Winds from the Sahara," Sally is relieved to know who has a problem with her presence. She believes Paddy wants her job. Paddy tries to keep Sally from doing her job at a critical moment in a storm, but she manages to break free. One day, Geoff invites her to...
