Lawns

Lawns and yards symbolize upper middle class success and normalcy. They evoke an image of the American Dream: homes with "pristine lawns" with "expensively fertilized sod" (5). The success of David and Marilyn Sorenson's marriage is evident in the opening scene in which Wendy is getting married on their perfectly manicured suburban lawn.

Ginkgo Tree

The gingko tree is symbolic of the lifespan as well as Marilyn and David's marriage. In the opening scene, Marilyn is ensconced beneath the gingko, rising from her guests and seeking out her soulmate.
