Summary

In Chapter 47, Elizabeth wakes and goes over the recent information. She suddenly realizes that Martha was the person who killed Mr. Thayer and Dr. Flynt. Martha is gathering flax when Elizabeth arrives at the farm. Martha says she is sorry about Star, and Elizabeth kisses her reassuringly. Martha says Eliza has gone to take a nap and that Thomas and Harry have gone to town. Martha assumes Elizabeth knows more than she does, and has to explain. Mr. Thayer and Dr. Flynt had planned to kidnap Abigail in order to force John Adams to return home where he would face an assassination attempt. Martha says Elizabeth's confrontation with Mr. Cleverly at the tavern has prompted their enemies to act more quickly than they had originally planned.
