Summary

In Chapter 26, Abigail believes Mr. Cleverly is interested in a relationship with Elizabeth and that Elizabeth should consider it. Elizabeth is uncertain what she will say if he proposes. One day, Mr. Cleverly seems to be working up to asking Elizabeth to marry him when Richard Cranch rushes in with the news that Mr. Thayer is dead. Elizabeth rushes away and realizes that Mr. Thayer was poisoned with belladonna. With that realization, she knows for certain that was also what killed Dr. Flynt. Elizabeth's thoughts immediately turn to fear for Abigail because of John's role in the war effort.
