The novel begins with a brief excerpt from Nicholas Flamel's journal informing the reader that Flamel and the twins whom he believes are the twins spoken of in the Book of Abraham are in Paris after escaping Dr. John Dee in Ojai, California. Dee has the Book of Abraham now except two pages Josh managed to tear free and this fact leaves Flamel and his wife, Perenelle, only weeks to live.
