Summary

In Chapter 28, the group is confronted by a group Conn quickly recognizes as Crowe’s minions. Benet attempts to fight off the group and protect the boys, and receives several wounds in the process. Conn orders Keeston to do magic, but Keeston insists he cannot remember any spells. Conn attempts the lothfalas spell, which creates a blinding light and allows Benet to get in several good attacks. Still, the minions recover and keep attacking. Conn performs the embero spell and directs it at the minions. The minions are transformed into rats and other vermin before scurrying away. The group then decides to hurry back to Heartsease.

In Nevery’s journal, he describes seeing the group return home after being attacked. Benet had a deep cut that required attention. Conn had a huge bruise on his ribs, though his bones remained unbroken. Keeston was...
