The Past - When the public baths are reopened, Marina and her friend Olga join the lineup. Their clothes are taken from them to be disinfected, and Marina is both shocked and horrified at the condition of her body, having been starved, frozen, and wrapped in the same clothes for months. In the steam room, she luxuriates in the fullness of the warmth, but is startled by a kick from the baby. She confesses to the suddenly concerned Olga what has happened to her, and at first Olga is skeptical, but realizes the truth when Marina puts her hand on her belly and she (Olga) feels the baby move.
