Summary

In Part VI, Chapter 1, Giovanna read constantly. Nella stopped asking questions, while Andrea asked constant questions about Roberto. To Giovanna, he seemed "a small, frail man" (243).

In Chapter 2, Giovanna and Roberto became friends. Giovanna felt self-conscious, afraid she was making herself ridiculous.

In Chapter 3, Giovanna continued her friendship with Giuliana and Angela. Giuliana was impressed by Giovanna's intellect. Sometimes Giovanna feared Giuliana would feel threatened and push her away (246).

In Chapter 4, though Angela pitied Giuliana, she approved of her visits to Milan, believing she and Roberto were now sleeping together. Tonino always accompanied her, but Angela did not think he could prevent them having sex.
