Chapters 12 through 16 Summary

In Chapter Twelve, the Mercer family gathers for dinner. Laurel has been angry at Sutton because Sutton promised her a ride to Nisha's party but then apparently left without her. As dinner is about to begin, Emma finds an origami swan by her plate with a note from Laurel, saying she's forgiven the slight. Mrs. Mercer says the tennis coach called with news that Sutton was "off her game." Emma says she must be a bit rusty and her father says it's because she didn't practice over the summer.

At one point, Sutton's dad, Dr. James Mercer, is staring intently at Emma and she believes he must know she isn't Sutton. Then he says he's just noticed a small scar on her chin and wonders when she got it. Emma was actually with her mother at a fast-food restaurant playland when...
