Summary

The novel opens with the Prologue in which a woman and her dog, Bob, are walking on the Reach when the dog finds a human bone. The first section of the novel is titled Rule One: Tell a Lie.

Chapter 1 opens with Isa hearing the text alert on her phone. She is breastfeeding her infant daughter. The text is from Kate, a friend from Isa's brief time at Salten House, a boarding school. Kate's message reads, “I need you” (Location 75). Isa knows that Kate would also have texted Thea West and Fatima Chaudhry. Fatima has a family and two children. Thea is working in a casino. Isa knows that all three of them will agree to arrive at Kate's side as soon as possible.

In Chapter 2, Isa hears Freya and rushes upstairs but finds her partner, Owen, is already holding their daughter...
