There is a Chinese community where Anna goes to the opium den. It is a town that will prosper as gold is mined and spent within the town.

Kaniere is where Ah Sook has his opium den. Anna Wetherell is a frequent visitor. Emery Staines stays there so no one can find him. It is seen as a plight on the community of Hokitika.

Sydney, Australia is where Anna Wetherell and Emery Staines started their journey to New Zealand. Sook Yongsheng is put on trial for murder in Sydney. He is charged with killing Shepard. The charges are dismissed when the man’s wife claims he committed suicide.
