Summary

Carver is riding on the Kaniere road and sees Anna on the roadside. He approaches her. Her walk is unsteady, and her face flushed. Anna taunts him that Crosbie got away and she helped. He wants to know where Crosbie is. Anna becomes frightened. He slaps her across the face. She turns to run and he grabs her shoulder jerking her back. A clap of gunshot is heard nearby scaring the horse.

When Anna opens her eyes Lowenthal is standing over her with a jar of laudanum and beside him is Edgar Clinch. They want to know what happened. She tells them Carver was the father of her child. She will not mention Crosbie Wells' name to protect him.

Wells finds Emery Staines on his door doubled over. Staines tells him that his baby is gone. Wells helps him in and listens to...
