Summary

Gascoigne first encountered Anna when he went to the jailhouse to collect bail. Anna told Gascoigne that she had gold in her dress which she can use to pay her bail. However, she cannot get to it in the jailhouse. Gascoigne pays for her bail pretending that it came from Anna. Anna follows him to his quarters and they take apart her dress. He gives her a dress of his late wife’s to wear. Anna is surprised to learn that she will be tried for attempted suicide. Gascoigne thinks that someone waited until Anna was unconscious and sewed the gold into her dress. She finds that unlikely. Anna was with Emery Staines the night before. She left his house to have opium. That is the last thing she remembers. Anna does not know...
