Summary

The phone rings again, and Don ignores it again. Don recalls a specific Christmas Day from his childhood, when he received a book of poetry that he had very much wanted. He then recalls the saloon he saw in his hometown when he was young. His friends and family told him that respectable people did not go to saloons. Don manages to spend the entire day in his apartment, possibly falling asleep. When he is next aware of the time, it is 5:00 PM. He falls back into his memories, thinking in vague and general terms about the various misadventures he has experienced over the years. His memories begin to become infused with terrifying and abstract nightmare images, possibly due to alcohol withdrawal. He thinks of the fact that he almost attempted suicide in the past.
