As David moves into his sophomore year in high school, he's placed in a program for slow learners. David says that he was bored with his studies and more interested in working to earn money. David says he was already seventeen and had less than a year left in foster care. As soon as school dismissed, he'd dash home and then off to one of his jobs. David is again isolated from his peers. He is working while others are dropping by his job at the fast food restaurant with their dates. Then David becomes obsessed with finding his father.
