Summary

Part III is titled Diyu. Chapter 11 is titled “The First Court.” Magnus recalls his childhood. His mother killed herself because Magnus was a demon. Magnus killed his stepfather in self-defense. Magnus was taken in by the Silent Brothers, a group of immortal Shadowhunters who have taken a vow of silence and serve as historians and healers for the Shadowhunters. Ragnor lost a bet and wound up helping Magnus learn to survive. Ragnor makes the distinction between the father who raised him and the demon who does not deserve to be called “father.” Magnus comes back to the present when Alec calls his name. Magnus manages to close the Portal. They realize Simon is not there. Clary uses their parabatai connection and is certain Simon is alive, but does not know where.
