Summary

Chapter 3 is titled “A Brief Farewell.” Alec and Magnus cannot find anyone they trust with Max. Alec calls on his mother, Maryse, who agrees to keep him. They arrive at the New York Institute, which is protected with glamour from human eyes. For most, the building is a symbol of their divine assignment. Magnus is struck by the fact that the relationships between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has changed over the centuries he has been alive. Today, Maryse Lightwood welcomes him “as something more like family and less like a business partner (Magnus) could never fully trust” (47). Magnus is in awe of the Institute and whispers inside, but Alec shouts for his mother.
