Summary

In Chapter 13, Caroline busied herself with notifying relatives of Mrs. Ayers’ death. She had Betty close the shutters and darken the rooms in a symbolic respect. Because Faraday had reported to Mrs. Ayers’ death, he was charged with doing a post-mortem. He noted that all of the bites and cuts he saw were on areas of Mrs. Ayers body that she could reach herself. There was no evidence that anyone but Mrs. Ayers had been involved in her death. He had worried he might find something that would implicate Caroline. An inquest determined that Mrs. Ayers had committed suicide.
