Summary

In Chapter 3, Mrs. Ayers arranged to throw a welcoming party for the new family at Standish. Because she did not have enough ration points for a supper, Mrs. Ayers decided on a drinks-only social for about ten people. Faraday was invited as well. Betty, Mrs. Bazeley and Caroline spent the weeks scrubbing and polishing to get ready for the affair.

When Faraday arrived in his patched evening wear he found that both Caroline and Mrs. Ayers were wearing old-fashioned floor length evening gowns. Caroline was even wearing makeup.
