Chapters 7 and 8 Summary

In the journal entry dated September 1, 1795, Jessica relates the story of finding her husband "caressing" a large number of gems. She came to the conclusion that he planned to carry them with him when he fled the country, for the people were almost ready to revolt. Jessica vows to steal the jewels from her husband when it comes time for her to escape, and that she will some day return them to the rightful owners, the people.

Lyon arrives at the party on Thursday before Christina. He is soon confronted by Cecille, his former mistress. She is determined to have him for her husband and arranges a moment alone in the library where she tells Christina to stay away from Lyon. Christina does not react until Cecille says that she will make up lies about Christina and that the Countess Patricia...
