Summary

In “Duchess,” Duchess knocked on the door of room 42 of the Sunshine Hotel to discover that his father was no longer staying there. The man who answered the door said he had been there since Monday, suggesting Duchess’s father had left the day after Duchess and Woolly left Salina. Duchess also peeked into room 49, what had once been the best room in the hotel. He noted the ceiling fan was gone, but the writing desk and chair were still there. Duchess believed it was the saddest room he had ever seen.

Duchess rented rooms for himself and Woolly at the hotel. He bribed the desk clerk to tell him where his father had gone. All the desk clerk could tell Duchess was that Patrick “Fitzy” FitzWilliams would probably know where Duchess’s father was.
