Kaleidoscopes

Kaleidoscopes represent Gabe’s connection to his mother, and act as an expression of her love for him and their strength as a family unit. The colored glass kaleidoscope that Gabe’s mother creates in their house for his birthday shows how even though she cannot give him expensive material things or an extravagant party, she knows him and knows he will appreciate this even more. They are connected by their shared artistic nature, and the fact that Gabe’s father is absent does not affect their ability to function. Kaleidoscopes also carry connotations of surrealism or escaping reality, a concept that both Gabe and his mother would appreciate in hard times.
