Hannah Hall/Michaels

Hannah Hall is Owen’s wife and the story’s protagonist and narrator. She is 38 years old and a professional woodturner but describes her profession more as “sculpting” (9). Her grandfather was also a woodturner, which is how she became interested in the profession. She was raised almost entirely by her grandfather; as she puts it, “he was at the center of [her] life for as far back as [she] can remember” (9). Her parents were never very interested in her upbringing, with her father traveling 280 days a year and spending the rest of his time at his family’s ranch in Tennessee. After Hannah’s father left her mother for his much younger assistant, her mother stopped coming home to see her as well.
