Chapter 7, The Marriage of Ernie Levy Part 5 Summary

Ernie comes to, believing he is back in the hospital at Mainz where he recuperated after his suicide attempt. He loses consciousness again as he hears trumpets of joy sounding. Ernie dreams of a real wedding with Golda. Much of the dream is symbolic, with blood tears, a butterfly, and dove. He is not certain at first if the bride is Ilse or Golda, but then sees she is Golda. He wakes from that dream and then has a dream/vision of him running near Stillenstadt, naked with his skin stripped from his body. His vision takes him back to Drancy and sees his whole family, including Golda. He is in horrific pain and grief. He has had a foretaste of loss and death.
