Summary

In Chapter 1, Amber worked out at the gym where she had been going every morning for the past three months. When a woman got onto the machine next to her, Amber knocked the magazine she was reading down onto the floor. When the woman saw it was about cystic fibrosis, she asked Amber if she was in the medical field. Amber lied and said that her sister Charlene had died from the disease. The woman told Amber that her sister had also died from the disease. Amber started to pretend to cry, and the woman introduced herself as Daphne Parrish and invited Amber out for coffee so they could talk. Later that night, Amber took a bubble bath and felt pleased with herself. Daphne had invited her to work on a fundraiser that her foundation, Julie’s Smile, was organizing.
