Summary

The narrative jumps back to the summer of 2017 in "The Plus-One Party: 10:30 a.m." and shows that Avery confronted Parker about Luce having seen him fighting with another woman. Avery thought to herself that the Lomans all took anything they wanted and decided "what would be theirs for the taking" (229). They always operated differently from the working-class people of Littleport.

Avery then ran into Connor at the party, and the two of them had sex. Afterward, Avery took a shower and went over the conversation she would have to have with Sadie in her head. However, once she exited the bathroom, she saw two policemen standing in the doorway with their hats in their hands, which indicated that they found Sadie's corpse.
