Food

Food is a symbol of love and togetherness. Richard tries to feed Ann as a way to show his love. Ann often rejects his offering, however. She stuffs herself with candy bars as she tries to find fulfillment through empty calories. She even tells Richard that she is tired of fancy food. This is like slapping him in the face.

Once Ann and Richard leave Los Angeles, food still plays a dominant role in bringing everyone together. The guests on the island eat together as a way to get to know each other. The writer and his wife do not participate on the night when everyone really starts to talk to each other. The next morning, they leave.
