The next morning Sughrue tries to make himself go for a run, but doesn't get very far. He's put to shame by Melinda, who leaves him in her athletic dust. Later, he walks through the nearby woods and encounters Trahearne's feisty mother Edna, who bullies him into catching some fish for her.
