Grace Bennett

Grace Bennett is the main character of this novel. She is a dynamic character as she transforms from a girl who is unsure of herself and her place to one whom others consider a hero for her contributions during the war. Grace works as an air raid patrol warden. She also began reading daily after people who took cover in the same air-raid shelter begged her to read to them. The stories distracted them from what was happening outside the shelter. One man shared with Grace that she had saved his life because he had gone to the shelter where she read instead of the one closest to where he worked. The shelter closest to where he worked had been hit by a bomb.
