Summary

Chapter 14 is titled “Brother.” The date is Saturday, September 14, 1929. Verchel has been living among the monks for awhile, and he has returned to his alcohol addiction. He often steals wine, and the monks have begun locking that beverage away from him. One day, Verchel is desperate and steals most of the wine set aside for communion. Someone enters, and he rushes to hide. The first place he can find is a confessional booth. A woman asks if he will hear her confession, and he agrees. She says her husband has committed violence and that she knows more violence will soon take place. Verchel suggests she contact the police, but she says the police cannot help. She says the intended victim is “that Singer at Loray … that woman Ella May” (351).
