Summary

The graphic novel opens with the narrator explaining that the small solar system of Ukbar is at the very edge of the explored universe. There are four planets and groups of Terran people have established colonies on each. Valerian and Laureline, agents of the Spatio-Temporal Agency of Galaxity, are still nearby, but they are the final connection the colonists have with home. They arrive at Ukbar I where Valerian is supposed to give the first of a series of speeches. He congratulates the colonists on their courage for undertaking this “Terran expansion” (4). The two attend a banquet in honor of the event. One of the colonists catches Valerian's attention. Valerian goes with the man, wondering if there is something wrong. The man takes Valerian to a brewery, showing him the “first alcohol distilled on Ukbar I” (5). It is made of algae. Valerian says...
