Summary

Adeline arrived at Dr. Gray’s home for the next meeting of the Jane Austen Society in Chapter 21. She passed Liberty at the door and entered the kitchen alone until Dr. Gray appeared. He asked her to help with tea, and while they moved around each other, they accidentally touched hands. Adeline quickly noticed their proximity and wished to be even closer to him. To make conversation, Adeline asked about Liberty. Dr. Gray explained that Harriet had called Adeline’s mother with news of his arrival without being told or asking him, citing this as a reason to fire her. When he began talking about her mother, Adeline interrupted to claim that her mother believed Dr. Gray saved her life.
