Summary

On “Day 4: 2008, (continued)” Young-sook is with Clara outside the memorial, and Clara tells Young-sook not to go into the museum, implying it would be too painful. The topic of conversation turns to Mi-ja, and Clara explains to Young-sook how she knew that her great-grandfather beat Mi-ja. “He terrified her. He had total control over her” (312). She then tells Young-sook how Mi-ja opened a “mom-and-pop grocery. Only minus the pop” (312) in Los Angeles, and how Mi-ja converted to Christianity after moving to the states. Clara also describes the agony Mi-ja felt every day for how she betrayed Young-sook. Then Clara takes the earbuds out of her ears and places them on Young-sook’s ears.
