Love

The theme of love is an important one in The Improbability of Love. It is central to the story and the basis of the painting, "The Improbability of Love." The painting was painted by Jean-Antoine Watteau, a French artist, for the woman he loved. His love was not reciprocated, though, and he died of a broken heart. It appears that Annie, too, may suffer the same fate as she has been unlucky in love. Having broken up with a long-time lover, Annie is devastated and takes up with an unavailable man who also rejects her.
