Summary

In Chapter 32, Billy and his mother go to the hospital after Mary has given birth. Billy visits Mary in her hospital room, but he does not see the baby there. Mary explains that the baby is in another room with the married couple that has agreed to adopt the baby. Mary explains that she and her father had prearranged to give the baby to the couple and that they had planned for her to have the baby out of town. Mary goes on to explain that Tyler Bell is the father. She had had a crush on him when he was an employee at the store, and they had sex one night. Afterwards, she felt ashamed of herself and lied to her father that Tyler had attempted to steal from the store. Her father promptly fired Tyler. Mary now feels ashamed of the lie...
