Summary

Varya recalls going to Kingston after Daniel's death. Mira showed her the information on Bruna Costello on Daniel's computer, explained that she called Eddie O'Donoghue after seeing it, and asked who Bruna was. Varya then told Mira about visiting the fortune teller when they were children. Eddie O'Donoghue was cleared of wrongdoing in Daniel's death; he had aimed for Daniel's pelvis, but missed and struck the femoral artery, causing Daniel to bleed out. Varya sees a note that Daniel had written about the Costellos, a Romani proverb, “Thoughts have wings” (291). That Thanksgiving, when Raj and Ruby visited, Varya did not really have a work conference, she simply did not want to see Daniel because she was so anxious about his possibly impending death. She also recalls seeing a therapist and explaining that she felt as though nothing was ever clean enough...
