Summary

Chapter 55 is titled “Emma” and opens with Miranda saying she would never have been Emma's friend except for her relationship with Mark. Miranda goes on to say that Emma is more interesting now that the truth is revealed, even though she is “a fucking weirdo” (305). Miranda says she knows people who made new friends after leaving college rather than holding on because of “some tenuous history” (305), and that she now realizes they were the smart ones. She pledges to never see any of them again. Miranda calls Emma a psychopath, though Emma has been formally diagnosed with a personality disorder. She feels all the time she has spent on Miranda demonstrates her love. Emma chokes Miranda, then pushes her, bringing back a memory of a girl she pushed into a sandpit when she was a child.
