Summary

The Letter: Kanai goes upstairs and, leaving his bags in the guest house, continues to the roof and his uncle’s study. Nilima has left the packet on the desk and inside Kanai is surprised to find there is only a notebook with a letter to him, dated May 15, 1979, on the first page. Nirmal tells Kanai that he is writing to him from the island of Morichjhapi but that it is not his story, but the story of “the only friend you made when you were here in Lusibari” (69). He also tells Kanai that he is afraid and does not want the upcoming events to be lost in history.
