Chapter 4: Graffiti

When Lucky is working on her report on the life cycle of an ant, Lincoln calls. He wants to borrow a black marker from her to correct sign. She asks if it he's referring to the population sign for Hard Pan or "Pop. 43." But Lincoln is referring to the traffic sign after that. He tells Lucky to meet him at the sign. Lincoln is always tying knots and regularly receives "Knot News" - the newsletter of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, of which Lincoln is the youngest member.

Before she leaves, she put a little mineral oil on her eyebrows. Brigitte won't let her wear any make-up. Lucky doesn't like her coloring. Everything - hair, skin, and eyes - are all the color of a sandy mushroom. At least the oil makes her eyebrows show up. She wonders...
