In Chapter 20, a new day begins in London, and only animals and sensitive people feel the darkness coming. A huge mass of spiraling clouds is masked by storms. After sunset people see the base of the spiral, glowing red over the Old Quarter. Wych-kin make their way to the Old Quarter from miles around, killing when so inclined as they travel. The next day, the sky remains dark. Many who venture out to work never return. Wolves attack carriage horses. Many die of Crimson Fever.
