Summary

Part 3 consists of Chapter 20 only. It is eight weeks after the shooting. Everyone is waiting on the grand jury's decision. Hailey approaches Starr at school with photos of Khalil, demanding to know why Starr lied about knowing him, as Hailey remembers having met him before at Starr's house. They argue, and Maya stands up for Starr. Hailey says Khalil's death was inevitable because he was a drug dealer and gang member. Starr punches Hailey and is suspended from school. Back at the Carter home, Maverick is leading a meeting with the local gangs, pleading them to keep the peace in the neighborhood if the grand jury fails to indict Officer Cruise. Neither of her parents are upset about what happened at school.
