Summary

The Carters arrive back at the store. The King Lords beat up Mr. Lewis, but they were really looking for DeVante, who was hiding. DeVante admits he stole $5,000 from King to get his family safely out of town. The Carters take DeVante to Uncle Carlos' house to stay. Uncle Carlos is on leave from work. Chris comes by looking for Starr, and Starr admits to her father that he is her boyfriend. DeVante tells Starr that Khalil was selling drugs for King, but only to pay a debt that his mother owed to the gang.

In Chapter 14, Starr goes over to Maya's house. Hailey is there as well. They see the interview with Officer Cruise's father on television. The report is interspersed with images from Garden Heights. Cruise's father claims his son feared for his life. Starr realizes her uncle Carlos had bruised...
