Summary

Chapter 19 returns to Ragnvald's first-person narration as Harald's and Hakon's forces make their way up the river to King Gudbrand's hall. Ragnvald's bite wound from the young boy pains him and he is worried that it will fester if he does not treat it carefully. The ships sail past many farms and Ragnvald notices a pretty girl who stops to look at them. She reminds him of Vigdis and Svanhild. Ragnvald waves at her and she waves back. The force hides in the forest until twilight before rowing further up river to attack. They finally reach Gudbrand's hall and the surrounding fields. Ragnvald, Oddi and Heming are sent to come around through a grove to join the attack as Hakon and his other sons join the main attack that is going to attack on the open slope to the hall.
