Summary

Chapter 16 moves to Svanhild's first-person narration as she lives with Hrolf Nefia's family after the gathering. She has taken to herding the animals outside and one day, gets in a fight with Egil, the brother of Hilda and the boy she was originally supposed to be married to. Svanhild calls him a coward and tells him that she is too good to marry him. Hrolf learns of these insults and tells Svanhild that she had better behave as a guest and that he will continue the task of finding her a suitable husband. That night, Svanhild lays in her bed contemplating her situation. She thinks about how Solvi pursued her at the gathering and that he must have liked her since she had no dowry to tempt him.
