Summary

Chapter 4 is in Svanhild's first-person narration as Egil arrives in Ardal. He immediately tells Svanhild and her family that Solvi killed Ragnvald and that his body is somewhere in the ocean. Olaf's behavior confirms Svanhild's suspicions that he had something to do with Ragnvald's death. Svanhild goes off to cry by herself then returns inside again when dinner is being served. As she does, Egil is saying his goodbyes to Svanhild's family. Before he leaves, Svanhild reminds Egil and her family that Ragnvald had to have won wealth while raiding and that Solvi owes their family that bounty and his murder price. The mention of the murder price makes her stepmother Vigdis force Svanhild into the kitchen where her mother is grinding grain. After she has taken a turn grinding the grain for a while, Svanhild questions her mother about their fate now...
